CyberSight buys DM shop

Toronto-based Internet development firm CyberSight has acquired Martin’s Direct & Loyalty, a traditional direct marketing agency, also based in Toronto. Martin Jeffery, the president and CEO of Martin’s Direct, will now serve as vice-president, direct and loyalty marketing of the operation, which is becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of CyberSight. Martin Direct’s existing clients include TD Asset Management, Volvo Canada, Plesman Publications, General Electric Appliances and Holt Renfrew Canada.

Globel bids on Cybersurf

Calgary-based direct marketing services firm Globel Direct furthered its acquisition strategy this month when it made a $12.3-million bid to acquire 100% ownership of Cybersurf Corp., the Calgary-based firm that began rolling out its 3Web-branded free Internet access service in major centres across Canada in 1999. Earlier this month, Globel completed its purchase of INet Communications, another Calgary-based firm, which offers online learning solutions to business customers. At press time, there was no official response by Cybersurf, which is embroiled in a legal suit with its Edmonton licensee, to Globel’s takeover proposal.

New partners join Royal Bank Visa Avion program

American Airlines, British Airways, Royal Airlines and Coast Hotels and Resorts have joined the Royal Bank Visa Avion Gold program, a loyalty marketing initiative launched after the merger of Canadian Airlines’ Canadian Plus frequent flyer program and Air Canada’s Aeroplan program. Under the new partnership agreements, Avion Gold credit cardholders can, for example, transfer their points to frequent flyer programs offered by American Airlines and British Airways, or earn bonus Avion points for booking accommodations with Coast Hotels.
