Media

After some weeks of speculation, a new editor of Saturday Night magazine has been announced.

Kenneth Whyte takes over from John Fraser in June.

Edmonton-based Whyte has been a contributor to Saturday Night, western editor, and, most recently, national editor.

Before being recruited by Fraser in 1990, the 33-year-old Whyte was the executive editor of Alberta Report.

Jeffrey Shearer, the magazine’s publisher, says it is significant Whyte is from Western Canada because it confirms what Saturday Night has been trying to do: reach out as a truly national publication.

Reputed at one time to be in line for Whyte’s new job were Globe and Mail editor-in-chief William Thorsell and British author and satirist Michael Coren.

Toronto-based Saturday Night is owned by Conrad Black’s Hollinger.

– As well as the Saturday Night announcement, another of Canada’s top magazines has a new editor.

Arthur Johnson, former executive editor of Canadian Business, takes over as editor after Randall Litchfield steps down in order to move to southwestern Ontario.

Canadian Business is the flagship of CB Media and is based in Toronto.

Johnson’s appointment comes less than six months before planned changes at Canadian Business, starting with the September issue.

According to Canadian Business, there will be more emphasis on ‘business as an expression of human will’ and more coverage of personal finance, among other changes.
