O’Neill signs on at Canada Popfone
Clients:
Two months after walking away from shoe manufacturer Bata Industries, where he had been president and chief executive officer for more than two and a half years, Martin O’Neill landed firmly on his feet at Canada Popfone.
O’Neill, who before joining Bata spent a number of years as head of marketing with Rubbermaid Canada and Braun Canada, signed on with Popfone on Feb. 1 as president and ceo.
Montreal-based Popfone, a division of National Telesystem, is one of four companies licensed by the federal government to bring public cordless telephone services to the marketplace.
– Ferrero Canada has tapped Robert Noxon, a longtime employee of Nestle Confectionary, to assume the newly formed post of director of marketing.
Noxon, who starts in his new job March 21, spent the last nine years with Nestle, most recently as business director for packaged and seasonal chocolates.
Noxon will report directly to Allan Cosman, Ferrero president and ceo.
Cosman says the creation of the new position reflects the company’s ‘commitment to strengthening Ferrero’s sales and marketing program in Canada.
– Beamscope Canada has appointed Susan Greenberg-Lulka to the position of director of marketing, effective March 2.
Greenberg-Lulka joins Beamscope from infoNet Media, where she was most recently sales manager.
She began her career in 1978 at Colgate-Palmolive and later moved on to Kraft General Foods.
Beamscope is a major distributor of computer-related home office products and video game products.
– Vachon, a division of Montreal-based Culinar, announced three brand management appointments in February.
Nicole Comeau has been hired to manage Vachon single-serve products, sold primarily in convenience stores.
Comeau joins the company from Johnson & Johnson, where she was an assistant product manager.
Laure Pene has been tapped to handle a number of brands, including Swiss Rolls Crispy Snack and Flamingo tarts, in the family pack segment.
A former employee of Corby Distilleries, Pene joined Vachon in 1992 and subsequently took several months off for pregnancy leave.
And Jacqueline Roberge has been named brand manager, also of the family pack segment, for Caramel, Half-Moon and Stuart pies.
Roberge joins Vachon from Reidcorp Advertising/Consultants, where she was an account executive. Before that, she worked in brand management with j&j.
– Octel Canada has announced two senior marketing appointments.
Sheila Flynn has been named marketing director of the company’s Voice Information Services division.
Flynn, a fomer employee of Northern Telecom, has 15 years’ experience in engineering, sales and marketing.
And Ross Tennant has been named marketing director for Octel’s Business Systems division.
Tennant joined Octel in 1989 from BC Tel Mobility, where he was a product marketing manager.
Agencies:
Alan Kay, general manager of Harrod & Mirlin, will be working part time for the agency for the rest of this year while also taking care of sales and marketing for Food Works of Toronto.
Food Works is marketing Lo Pro Lunch, a product for those with Parkinson’s Disease, which has been developed by Morty Shulman’s Parkinson Trust.
Kay, a 30-year veteran of the advertising industry, has been with h&r for five years, the last three as general manager.
– Dave Lindley has been named general manager of Grey Healthcare Toronto and vice-president of Grey.
For the past three years, he has been working on assignment in Hong Kong and Europe.
Lindley is a former senior marketing manager with a Canadian pharmaceutical company and a founder of Toronto healthcare ad agency Lindley Billinghurst Johnson.
– Rocco Gagliese has joined Bensimon/Byrne of Toronto, the agency handling the Eaton’s account, as writer.
Gagliese comes from a three-year stint with music production company Harris Cole Wilde and its radio advertising division, Radio Dispatch.

Claude Durand, a sponsorship specialist with a background in food retailing, has been named director of marketing at public broadcaster Radio-Quebec.
Durand’s earlier postings include director, advertising, promotions and market research at Metro-Richelieu, similar functions at Steinberg, and a stint as a project director with Nantel & Associes.
Jean-Louis Nadeau is Radio-Quebec director responsible for sponsorships.
– Francois Decarie has been named vice-president/general manager at Impact Research.
Decarie’s new responsibilities include the development and management of Impact offices in Montreal, Quebec City and Toronto.
Impact Research, a subsidiary of the Cossette Group, specializes in marketing communications and in the evaluation of advertising effectiveness, media consultation and sponsorship impact and measurement studies.
– Kelly Blair is the new research director for The Hazelton Group, a Toronto research firm.
Blair’s experience includes new product and brand equity development, customer satisfaction and communications measurement.
