Reader’s Digest Czech edition
The latest of Reader’s Digest’s long line of local language editions has rolled off the press in the Czech Republic.
Called Reader’s Digest Vyber, the monthly will have an initial circulation of 50,000, with each copy costing 45 crowns – about $2.10. Annual subscriptions, available next year, will cost 449 crowns, a little more than $20.
Reader’s Digest Vyber is based in Prague and is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Reader’s Digest Association in Pleasantville, n.y.
The Czech addition means Reader’s Digest is published in 17 languages in 45 editions.
Southam earnings up
Southam has reported improved earnings in the third quarter.
The company says the improvement has come largely due to continuing cost reductions and despite ‘disappointing’ advertising linage volume in its newspaper operations.
Southam’s third-quarter loss of $3.7 million compares with a loss of $42.7 million in 1992. That loss included $32.5 million of unusual items, after tax, and was principally related to the sale of the company’s interests in Torstar, publisher of The Toronto Star and other titles.
Physican’s Guide revamp
Physician’s Guide has redesigned its core directory section offering doctors expanded, more comprehensive listings of all forms of continuing medical education worldwide.
Doctors who receive the magazine can now dial in the codes of cme by location and receive by fax or mail literature on the events selected. This new approach allows the publisher to offer more listings.
Quadravision CD-ROM
One of Canada’s first corporate cd-roms has just been produced for Mediacom’s annual creative show, The Billi Awards.
Produced by Quadravision Communications in Toronto, the cd-rom is a show book which presents more than 200 posters including all finalists and winners.
Quadravision produced and pressed the cd-rom in three weeks rather than the industry average of six months.
The company has also produced The Billis for the last 12 years.
The Mediacom cd-rom looks identical to a conventional audio cd. A cd-rom can hold the equivalent of more than 250,000 pages of text or more than an hour of video.
