Echo Advertising of Toronto has nabbed another award for its Phantom of the Opera work for Live Entertainment.

‘Candles’ has won a number of awards in Canada and in the u.s., including a gold Bessie and a gold at the Chicago Film Festival.

On June 16 in Hollywood, it picks up its latest for best live-action, English-language 30-second spot produced outside the u.s. at the International Broadcasting Awards.

– Outdoor Canada/The Sportsmen’s Shows has chosen a short-list for its $1-million account that includes incumbent Echo Advertising along with Creative Productions Canada, Miles Advertising and Garner Healey.

All are Toronto agencies.

Agency presentations take place this week with a decision expected soon after.

Outdoor Canada puts on 13 outdoor-related shows across Canada annually, including one of North America’s largest, the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show, and wants a new agency in place for its ski show in September.

– A decision is imminent in the Loto-Quebec review for Casino de Montreal, the first permanent casino in Quebec.

In the running for the $1.5-million North American account are Montreal agencies BCP Strategy-Creativity, Cossette Communication-Marketing and Marketel.

The casino, which opens in October at the site of the Expo 67 French Pavilion, is expected to be a boost to the province’s tourist industry.

– Cathay Pacific chose McCann-Erickson Worldwide to handle its US$30-million global advertising account, effective Sept. 1.

Ogilvy & Mather was the runner-up in the review that started in March and was handled by the airline from its base in Hong Kong.

Leo Burnett currently has the business.

The Vancouver office of McCann-Erickson will be key in handling the $1-million Canadian portion of the assignment.

– Fisons Corporation has awarded the advertising account for two prescription asthma drugs to JW&R Advertising of Brampton, Ont.

jw&r will be handling print and collateral creative, along with media planning and buying for Tilade, an inhaled drug introduced in 1990, and Intal, an established product used frequently in treating children with asthma.

Previous agency was Medicus Intercon, Toronto.

– Last month, Toronto’s The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto agency Kornblum International and Starlight Foundation Canada launched Starlight Fun Centres, portable entertainment units that include a tv, vcr and Nintendo.

The two now in use at the hospital’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and the Short Stay Unit were donated by Kornblum, whose president, Warren Kornblum, is chairman of the board for Starlight Foundation Canada, a non-profit organization that grants the wishes of critically and terminally ill children.

– The Real Seguin Foundation presented the first Real Seguin Scholarship to Louise Magistry, a graduating graphic design student from the University of Quebec in Montreal, during a ceremony this past April.

The annual award, a $2,000 bursary, is named for Real Seguin, part of the Quebec graphic design community for more than 30 years and founding member of Cabana Seguin Design of Montreal.

– Comstock of Toronto has released the ‘Comstock Encyclopedia of Stock Photography CD-ROM Volume I: Business and Industry,’ the first in a five-volume set.

The completed series will offer nearly 15,000 images that can be imported directly into a page layout from a cd-rom drive connected to a computer.

Photo Browser software for each volume will allow users to search through the images for selection.
