Mcbride Advertising of Montreal has established a pharmaceutical division and will be focussing the firm’s business development efforts in that area.

Kenneth MacAlpine has joined the firm as director of account services, pharmaceutical. MacAlpine has specialized in health care communications for more than 20 years.

– The Canadian Advertising Foundation is seeking applicants for its annual Robert E. Oliver Scholarships. Students enrolled in two-, three- or four-year marketing or advertising-related courses at a Canadian college or university are eligible.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded based on academic record and a 500-word essay.

– Key Pharmaceutical Products, a division of Schering Canada, has awarded the assignment for two of its brands to Allard/SMW of Montreal.

The business was previously with Grey Healthcare.

The two pharmaceutical products are Nitro-Dur, a patch that provides an even flow of nitroglycerine to angina patients, and K-Dur, a fast-acting potassium supplement in capsule form.

– The Chris Hughes Company of Toronto is launching a national outdoor campaign this month for the First Choice Haircutters chain of 180 franchised outlets.

The line ‘Man cuts off hair without losing arm and leg’ will appear on exterior transit and billboard ads, with some newspaper support.

– Jack Neary, senior vice-president, creative director of Chiat/Day, Toronto has been named the Canadian representative on the film jury for the 1993 Cannes International Advertising Festival.

– SmithKline Beecham Consumer Brands has hired the Cundari Group of Toronto as its sole promotional agency after a review of five firms.

Grey Canada handles advertising for SmithKline, a manufacturer of consumer healthcare products.

– The Jordan Shane Agency of Toronto has picked up three new pieces of business.

This month, it will launch the southwestern Ontario multimedia campaign for the community of Springdale, a development of 22,000 homes northwest of Toronto.

The agency has also been hired to handle a national print and radio campaign for German-produced Kwai garlic pills, which are sold through pharmacies and health food stores.

The third new client is Belmont Construction and its Kingsbridge Grand condominium project in Mississauga, Ont.

– Dave Reppen, vice-president and creative director at Griffin Bacal Volny (previously Paul Phelan & Perry), was joined by co-workers and industry friends earlier this month in a celebration of his 25 years with the agency.

– JW&R Advertising, a Brampton, Ont. agency with several healthcare clients, has been awarded the assignment for the Alliance for a Drug-Free Canada.

Previous agency was Leo Burnett.

The alliance was formed by major businesses to provide education about substance abuse issues to those in the business community.
