The television Bureau of Canada has announced its board of directors for 1993.
The new officers are: Don Willcox, general manager, ckco-tv in Kitchener, Ont., chairman; Cameron Fellman, president, Television Bureau of Canada, president; Charles Belanger, vice-president executive, cfjp-tv in Montreal; Rodger Hone, senior vice-chairman, Global Communications, vice-chairman; Peter Kretz, general manager, marketing and sales, CBC TV Sales, secretary-treasurer.
New directors are Ron Bremner, president and chief executive officer, bctv; Drew Craig, general manager, chmi-tv in Portage la Prairie, Ont.; George Gonzo, executive vice-president, CFCN Communications in Calgary; James Macdonald, vice-president, sales and station manager, CFMT 47, the Toronto-based multilingual channel; Michael McCabe, president, The Canadian Association of Broadcasters; Keith Morrison, president and chief executive officer, Western Broadcast Sales; Robert Trempe, directeur general, vente et marketing, Societe Radio-Canada; Ron Waters, vice-president and general manager, Citytv in Toronto.
è The author of a new book, Do-It-Yourself Direct Marketing, says small- and medium-sized businesses should focus on direct marketing rather than on less measurable forms of advertising and promotion during tough economic times.
Las Vegas-based author Mark Bacon says direct marketing is accountable advertising that asks for a direct, measurable response. It allows an advertiser to generate sales, while gaining exposure, and is thus ideally suited to smaller-size businesses.
è The Toronto Transit Commission and Tele-Direct Yellow Pages have joined forces on Ride Guide, the ttc’s free standing map of Toronto outlining all major routes serviced by transit, as well as points of interest and general information about the transit service.
The ttc and Tele-Direct will produce a variation of the Ride Guide and bind it into the centre of the Yellow Pages of the City of Toronto and the Cities of Etobicoke, Scarborough and North York which form part of Metropolitan Toronto.
Total distribution of the 1993 Ride Guide will be about 1.7 million copies. The first copies should be out by mid-March.
è Southam has sold its controlling interest in Bauer/Southam Audio Video of Dallas to a management group led by Ted Meredith, former president and chief executive officer of Southam Business Communications USA, and Skylar Cunningham, president of Bauer.
The deal closed Dec. 31. No financial details were disclosed.
Last October, Southam sold its Canadian audio visual company to Adcom Electronics. With the u.s. sale, Southam has now sold off its North American audio visual assets except for its minority interest in Bauer.
è One of Canada’s largest computer service bureaus and lettershops, Herbert A. Watts, has beefed up the technology it uses.
Newly installed is an Advantage Mailer from Bell and Howell which can insert up to six pieces of mail at 18,000 pieces an hour. Envelope size for the new machine ranges from 3.5 inches by 6 inches to 6.4 inches by 12 inches.
According to Rip Gauthier, chairman and chief executive officer of The Watts Group of Marketing Companies, his firm has also made substantial investments in new computer hardware.
Spending on the new technology tops the $1 million mark, The Watts Group says.
At the company’s new office in Toronto, a new dedicated fibre optic link connected directly to Bell Canada’s Central Office has been installed.
