Among the 200 employees to be cut Sept. 19 by Labatt Breweries of Canada are 23 marketers, 14 of whom are based in Toronto.

As well as cutting staff, Labatt has also shifted the responsibilities of a number of the people who remain. The changes include:

– Paul Shaver, formerly brand manager on Labatt Extra Dry and Carlsberg, becomes brand manager of regional brands. His new responsibilities inlcude Kokanee which is sold in b.c., and Keith’s IPA, which is sold in Nova Scotia.

– Brian Semkuley, brand manager for Labatt Lite, picks up Labatt Extra Dry.

– Doug Frain, formerly in charge of Eastern regional brands, joins Glen Cavanagh in new business development.

– Phil Carter, formerly senior vice-president of marketing services, becomes the Atlantic regional president in Halifax.

– Paul Smith, formerly director of internal communications, becomes director of public relations/communications.

è IBM Canada has appointed Mike Quinn, formerly product manager for market-driven quality, as senior communications advisor for media relations. Quinn replaces Stan Didzbalis, who left the company Aug. 15 to form a new Toronto public relations firm, Benchmark Communications.

è The post of director of marketing for A&A Music and Entertainment of Toronto is vacant following the departure of Deborah MacLellan after just more than a month on the job. MacLellan has not been replaced and Zan Molko, vice-president of franchising, is also handling the marketing duties.

When MacLellan joined a&a in May, she put the company’s search for an ad agency on hold and moved the advertising function in-house while she conducted a review of corporate objectives and strategies.

MacLellan was a consultant with her own company before joining a&a.

Catherine Lynch has been named director of Cohen Public Relations, a newly formed division of The Cohen Group of Richmond Hill, Ont. Prior to joining Cohen three years ago, Lynch was an editor in the publishing industry.

David Underwood has joined the agency as director of another new unit, Cohen Promotions. Underwood brings more than 10 years of sales promotion and marketing experience to his new post.

Gloria Cohen has moved to the newly created position of director of strategic marketing after four years overseeing account service activities at The Cohen Group.
