Cannes: Canada earns 10 more noms

Canada racks up 10 more nods today, this time in the Film category. There were 138 Canadian spots entered this year, down from 177 in 2009 and reflective of the drop in production during last year’s recession. Leading the pack and tied with two noms each are Toronto shop Zig with two Ikea Canada spots produced by Radke Film Group, and TBWAVancouver’s work for the Vancouver International Film Festival, produced by OPC Toronto with Biscuit Filmworks in Los Angeles.

Zig garners attention for the ‘We Thought of That’ campaign launched last fall and voiced over by David Hyde Pierce of Frasier fame; both the Pax Wadrobe and Besta Storage Units spots are singled out. TBWAVancouver’s ‘Sexuality’ and ‘Subtitles’ spots for the Film Fest also made the list, as did Vancouver’s Rethink for the ‘Ice Creamy Goodness’ campaign for the Science World, produced by Steam Films Vancouver.

Montreal agency Palm & Havas represents Quebec in the shortlist lineup, for its VW Golf City spot for the Quebec Volkswagen Dealers’ Marketing. Other Canadian shops to make the cut with one nom each are Five Strangers Films out of Toronto with a Jack Rabbit Light beer spot for Big Rock Beer, BBDO Toronto’s tearjerker ‘Arctic Sun‘ for PepsiCo’s Tropicana Orange Juice, produced by Radke Film Group with Filmgroup.tv Vancouver, DDB Toronto’s Canadian Cancer Society spot ‘Fight’ produced by Industry Films, and JWT Toronto’s ‘Bent’ campaign for Tylenol Back Pain.
