Media buyer shortage

Thank you for your article ‘Agencies face shortage of buyers, planners,’ July 30, 01.

After being in the business for more than six years, I get to be labeled as one of those media people in the ‘middle.’ Further, by working in both Edmonton and Toronto, I have also had the opportunity to talk to other media professionals as to why the shortage exists. Your article did a great job hitting the nail on the head regarding a couple of issues (especially on remuneration).

It is difficult to motivate your team (or yourself) while suffering from third-class citizen treatment, underpayment, disrespect (from outside and inside the media department), long hours and poor training. However, it is nearly impossible when you know there are people in other departments making more money.

I recognize that every job has its ups and downs, challenges and drudgery. All we media people are asking for is fair payment … and maybe a little respect.
