Scott realignment marks demise of JWT branch

J. Walter Thompson is moving its Scott Paper account to its Toronto office and closing its Vancouver office at the end of the month, putting 10 staff members out of work.

jwt is negotiating with an unnamed Vancouver agency to take on its remaining West Coast accounts.

John Clinton, JWT Canada president and chief executive officer, says changes at Scott Paper, JWT, Vancouver’s cornerstone account for 30 years, brought about the closure.

Those changes include Scott Paper’s realignment of ad assignments late last year and its announced intention to move its head office out of Vancouver, and possibly out of b.c.

Scott Paper’s worldwide account shuffle in 1994 resulted in jwt getting about 70% of the global business, with the rest going to McCann-Erickson Advertising and Bozell Palmer Bonner.

In Canada, jwt has a bathroom tissue assignment and facial tissue brands, while McCann picked up the paper towel business, and Bozell was awarded Baby Fresh Wipes and a bathroom tissue brand.

The reallocation of the brands should be clarified later this month.

Clinton says the shift of the business to Toronto also makes it easier to co-ordinate with Scott’s u.s. headquarters in Philadelphia and jwt in New York, which until the realignment did not have any u.s. Scott Paper business. PS
