Future Shop takes project tack: W.B. Doner first up on creative work

After completing an agency review for its $20-million account, Future Shop has decided against a full-service relationship, opting instead to work with agencies on a project basis.

Eric Ommundsen, public relations manager for the Vancouver-based retailer, says W.B. Doner of Southfield, Mich., one of the finalists in the review, will be used for creative projects, along with other agencies as needed.

The Evans Group of Seattle, Wash. and the Detroit, Mich. office of J. Walter Thompson were also on the shortlist.

Bozell Worldwide of Toronto and Palmer Jarvis Advertising of Vancouver each withdrew from the process.

A decision on which media buying services will handle the media portion of the business in Canada and the u.s. is expected soon.

Publicite Martin of Montreal handles Future Shop’s advertising in Quebec.

Ommundsen says the decision to handle advertising on a project basis is not a reflection on the agencies in the review or their presentations, but better suits the changing environment within Future Shop, particularly as the company intends to expand its in-house advertising department.

Future Shop has 76 stores in Canada and 28 in the northwestern u.s. states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Montana.
