Yahoo! wants ‘You In’

The CSR campaign leading into Thanksgiving weekend is asking Canadians to commit an act of kindness and help a charity win $10,000.

You in?

That’s what Yahoo! Canada wants to know.

With Thanksgiving approaching, the company has started a weeklong ‘You In?’ campaign to inspire Canadians to commit 10,000 acts of kindness to raise money for good causes through the Yahoo! Canada Facebook page.

After ‘liking’ Yahoo!, users can pledge to commit an act of kindness. When they pledge, they’re given the option of which of the five charities they’d like to pledge their act to. When the campaign ends on Friday, the cause with the most pledges receives $10,000 from Yahoo! Canada.

The campaign is a way for Yahoo! to engage its followers and fans and build up its social media presence, and participants are being asked to use the #youin hashtag in both Twitter and Facebook updates, says David Soyka, consumer marketing manager at Yahoo! Canada.

The charities involved are the Design Exchange, Canadian Wildlife Federation, Canadian Hero Fund, War Child Canada and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Targeted at the entire Yahoo! Canada community, the campaign is being spread through the company’s social media channels and with a small media buy on Facebook. The buy was handled in-house. Toronto-based Sequentia Environics is handling execution of the program and promotional elements.

Though not originally planned as a Thanksgiving campaign, the timing has been fortuitous, says Soyka.

‘This was something we’d been working on for a little while, and as we were looking at the work we had to do, we realized very quickly that we were lining up quite nicely with Thanksgiving, and that just seemed to be a really good time to talk about kindness,’ he says. ‘This seems to be a week where people will be a little bit more open to that.’
