More than half of marketers and creatives are considering a career move

More than half of Canadian marketing and creative professionals are considering a move this year.

A Robert Half survey of 1,140 professionals from the summer reveals that 51% of marketing and creative respondents are either already looking for or plan to look for work by the year’s end. That’s 10% higher than the average (41%) for those in fields such as finance and accounting, tech, legal, admin and HR.

The main reasons cited across all professions are higher salary (64%), remote work options (28%) and more opportunity for advancement (23%). Those most likely to make a move this year are Gen Z (64%). Contract work, meanwhile, is a viable route for many professionals, with 31% of all workers saying they are interested in taking up contract work in the future.

When applying for an open position, marketers and creative professionals report they would lose interest and withdraw from consideration due to poor communication and follow-up from the hiring manager (55%). Marketers and creatives say they would also lose interest in “excessive” rounds of interviews, that is more than three (41%), as well as delayed decision-making/lengthy timelines for feedback (31%).

“Many employers continue to face challenges with their recruitment efforts,” says David King, senior managing director, Robert Half, Canada and South America. “Ensuring that your company offers competitive pay and benefits, a supportive work culture that promotes employee satisfaction, career growth opportunities, and some level of flexibility, will give your business a large advantage when it comes to attracting and retaining talent.”

In another Robert Half online survey of 1,132 workers from May, 36% of respondents reported being more burned out now than a year ago. Workers stated that the most common factors contributing to burnout are heavy workloads (54%), lack of communication and support from management (29%) and toxic organizational culture (26%).
