The Art Directors Club of Toronto staged its annual show and awards presentation at Toronto’s Winter Garden Theatre on Oct. 20.
The event, known as Direction ’92, was the last official function for the group under that name; from now on it will be known as The Advertising and Design Club of Canada.
Chiat/Day/Mojo won a gold for tv campaign for its ‘Skier,’ ‘Bedroom,’ and ‘Saferway’ spots for Labatt Breweries of Canada. Art director was Howard Beauchamp. ‘Skier’ also took the gold for tv single spot of 30 seconds or over.
Pirate Radio won a gold for radio campaign with its spots, ‘We Wish You A Merry Haircut,’ ‘When Dry Cleaners Dream,’ and ‘Oh, Come All Ye Heels’ for First Canadian Place Shops. Writer/creative director/director, Terry O’Reilly. The gold for radio single went to ‘When Dry Cleaners Dream.’
Design firm Alstad/Garneau won a gold in the advertising poster single category for ‘Sound Affects’ for Rosnick McKinnon.
Design firm Vopni & Parsons picked up a gold for ‘Vancouver Island’ in the advertising photography category for Instil Productions. Art director, Jon Vopni.
Ad agency Go Direct and design firm Suburbia Studios won a gold in advertising illustration for ‘Showcase British Columbia’ for Showcase B.C. Consortium. Art director/illustrator, Russ Willms.
The 1992 Les Usherwood Award was presented to Terry Iles, art director at McCann-Erickson of Toronto, in recognition of his contribution to the industry over the past 30 years. PS
