Pay for Timmies with a tap of your phone

Tim Hortons customers can now pay for their coffee and donuts with their smartphones.

The company has launched its mobile payment option across Canada and the U.S., several years after rival Starbucks began offering mobile payments at its stores and linked it to its loyalty system, and joins a growing list of companies making it more convenient to pay for products without cash.

Customers can download the TimmyMe app, register a pre-paid Tim Hortons card on the app, then use their mobile device to pay for purchases. Users can also search for the nearest Tim Hortons and look up nutritional information for menu items with the app.

Potential fan favourite, the brand has also included a group function on the app, which allows people going to “Timmie runs” to sync up their phones with colleagues and friends – who are sent push notifications asking for their orders (and tracking costs).

This new mobile payment system comes on the eve of the brand’s 50th anniversary.

The app is available for Blackberry, iPhone and Android platforms, and also provides support for Apple’s Passbook.
