…The bloodletting at The Globe and Mail has already begun, with about 40 staffers aged 58-plus being offered buy-outs that are said to be on the meagre side of the money equation. More editorial staff cuts and changes are expected when new editor Richard Addis arrives next month.

…Brandworks International will be handling the September launch of Report on Business Television (ROB TV), a joint venture of The Globe and Mail and WIC Western International Communications. The campaign will likely include print, merchandising and some business-to-business marketing to alert media buyers to the property. It’s somewhat ironic, since the small agency had the Globe business for three years before the paper replaced it last November with communications giant BBDO Canada.

…Many maritime agency types believe the outcome of the review for the $17-million Aliant business could be a foregone conclusion since Bell Canada’s agency Cossette Communication-Marketing is on the shortlist. The smoking gun? BCE, Bell’s parent company, has a 41.6% piece of the holding company of the four Atlantic region telcos comprising Aliant, and Cossette did just purchase Pulse Marketing of Halifax this past June.

… Sue Jaffe has retired after 20 years with SMW (now Publicis-SMW), most recently as senior vice-president, managing director for client business development. Jaffe is taking a six-month sabbatical to travel and spend time with her family before thinking about resuming her career.

… The broadcast-types at CanWest Global Communications have decided that a stylish new logo – a crescent-shaped globe created by Cossette Communication-Marketing for Halifax-based telco MTT (formerly MT&T) is strikingly reminiscent of Global’s own patented red arc. Lawyers for the broadcaster quickly fired off a missive to MTT, asking that the telco cease using the allegedly purloined logo. A spokesperson for Global said the two sides are engaged in ‘amicable discussions,’ and that they are seeking ‘a resolution without any lawyers.’
