Celebration intent flat for Thanksgiving

About six in 10 Canadians are planning to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, which is the same as in 2023.

That’s according to Numerator’s Holiday Preview of 2,000 Canadian consumers. The data reveals that 62% of Canadian consumers say they’ll cook or bake something special to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, on par with intentions to attend or host a gathering, while 30% of respondents plan to decorate their homes to honour the holiday.

Further down the ledger, 16% are giving gifts or venturing out of the home for dinner/drinks, while 15% will order food/drinks for delivery/takeout.

The Numerator data reveals that 86% of Thanksgiving celebrants will purchase food for the holiday, ahead of 49% for alcoholic beverages, 32% for non-alc beverages, 26% for decorations and 20% for candy. Marketers should note that only 4% of respondents said they will not purchase anything.

Thanksgiving shoppers will primarily shop at grocery stores (72%), liquor stores (47%), mass retailers (34%) and dollar channels (20%). Two-thirds of respondents reveal their Thanksgiving spend will be the same as 2023.

Halloween celebration intent, meanwhile, is up marginally from 62% to 63% year-over-year, and nearly seven in 10 households will be handing out candy, with 63% decorating their homes.

The most purchased items  are candy (84%), decorations (54%), costumes (52%) and food (36%).

Dollar channels are the top destination for Halloween shoppers (55%), topping mass retailers (51%) and grocery (45%).

As with Thanksgiving, two-thirds of respondents will equal last year’s spend.
