Award-winning ad exec Frances Weinstein passes away

Frances (Fransi) Marilyn Weinstein passed on away Saturday.

Weinstein, an advertising-industry titan with a career that spanned decades, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020.

She served as creative director with Ogilvy, senior VP at BBDO and spent time at influential agencies such as Young & Rubicam, Grey and J Walter Thompson during her distinguished career in advertising.

She received a lifetime achievement award from the Canadian Marketing Association (CMA) in 2000.

Weinstein contributed significantly to the industry through her involvement in the CMA, where she sat on several councils and task forces. She chaired the RSVP judging committee, wrote a regular column on direct marketing for strategy and sat on the advisory board of the advertising copywriting program at Humber College in Toronto.

Family and friends said in an obituary posted by Montreal funeral home Paperman & Sons that Weinstein had a brilliant, creative mind, a passion for words and was devoted to recognizing and mentoring new talent.

Her loved ones say she was strong, independent, modern, optimistic, inspiring and compassionate.

In 2000, Weinstein established her own boutique agency, Tattoo Direct + Digital (see, below), which operated for nearly 10 years. She continued to work as a freelance writer until the later stages of her life.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow (April 8) at Baron de Hirsch Back River Cemetery in Montreal.

A celebration of life will follow in Toronto at a yet-to-be-determined date.

Friends and family ask that donations in Weinstein’s memory be made to Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
