CIBC has brought its new spokesperson together with its slightly older one, but the campaign shows the two actually go way back.
A pair of videos in English and French, created by Juniper Park\TBWA, show just how deep NHL rookie sensation Connor McDavid’s connection with Percy the Penguin goes, as the penguin has been with him since McDavid was a baby and there for all the major life moments with him and his older brother, Cam.
The videos then go into the present day, showing Percy and the McDavids shooting around in the driveway and playing video games before something happens that requires Connor to use one of CIBC’s services, like using touchless payment to pay for (a lot of) pizzas Percy ordered, or making an e-transfer through the CIBC app to pay him back for a meal from the previous night.

The videos are McDavid’s first work as the bank’s (human) spokesperson, having announced the partnership earlier this month. Though the idea of McDavid having a talking penguin as a childhood friend is clearly fictional (Percy has only existed since 2013, after all), the “Connor and CIBC, friends from day one” tagline refers to the fact that McDavid has been a CIBC customer since childhood.
The videos are also meant to fit in with CIBC’s “#FitsYourLife” platform, showing how apps, e-transfers and touchless payment can help banking fit in with the other things you do in a regular day. They will live on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, with GIFs from the videos created for Instagram.
