Unilever launches program to provide clean water

Unilever used its morning session today at the Cannes Festival of Creativity to launch Waterworks, a new program in partnership with Population Services International (PSI) and Facebook.

The program will work to provide clean drinking water to the almost 800 million people worldwide who do not have access to it. This is done through consumers signing up to the cause through the Facebook app and choosing a small daily donation, as little as 10 cents a day. The donated funds will go directly to communities in need, where Waterworks will provide Pureit water filters and education on the benefits of clean drinking water, according to a release.

The first phase of the campaign will see PSI train 75 Waterworkers in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India on the need for clean drinking water and distribute water purifiers to families in the area. Consumers who “partner with a Waterworker” on the Facebook app will be sent updates on how the work is progressing around the world.
